How to Pick a Gift

Buying a gift for someone isn’t always easy, some people are more difficult to buy for.

How do you get the perfect gift for your family or friend?

How do you make sure you don’t look like a complete bozo when they open the bag or box?

Here are some considerations for buying gifts

  • Is this person very active or inactive
  • Is the item seasonal or will they be able to use it year round
  • Is this something you can picture them using
  • Do they have anything similar to this item
  • Are they rough on things or gentle?
  • Are you buying with your tastes in mind or theirs?
  • Will this gift last?
  • Can it be returned if all else fails?
  • Get a 2nd opinion

Is this person very active?

I think this is super important because if you buy them an item that’s more fragile and they’ll wear it regularly, you need to make sure it will hold up. Personally, I’m rough on things, so super fragile objects are not the best gift for me. Buy a gift that matches their personality. If they are rough and rugged, get them something that can stand up to that.

Is the gift seasonal?

Keep this in mind when buying a gift. There is of course nothing wrong with seasonal gifts, just make sure it fits in with their lifestyle. A warm cozy blanket isn’t a year round gift, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be adored and loved.

Can you picture them using this item?

The gift isn’t for you, it’s for them. So make sure you can picture them actually using the item.

Do they have something similar?

If they do have something like it already, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Maybe they could use another one? At least you know they’ll get some use out of it. On the other hand, maybe they don’t need another one. This depends on the item. It’s probably not a good idea to buy them a home decor item that they already have.

Will this gift last?

Read reviews and make sure the item is durable. You don’t want to buy something and it fall apart a month later. Once again, picture the person using the gift

Can it be returned?

Maybe your gift doesn’t work out, can it be returned? Keep receipts. Maybe you get the wrong size, or they’d prefer another color. In that case, it’s an easy remedy.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone else’s opinion

It’s okay to ask someone else what they think about it. You MIGHT be overlooking someone. Better yet, you might get another person’s approval!
